Gisele Amantea

Gisele Amantea lives in Montreal where she taught in the Studio Arts program at Concordia University from 1995 to 2012. Amantea's work is known for its interdisciplinary focus and innovative use of a variety of materials, formats and processes to explore questions related to gender, class, nostalgia, history, memory and the relationship of private and public space. Media in which she has made work ranges from sculpture, drawing, wallpaper and textiles to video and bookworks. At the same time, her practice has had a strong research base in the sense that work is often made in response to, provoked or generated by a specific context or place, and depends, to some extent, on research undertaken in these locations. This includes making on-site observations, visiting official repositories of history such as archives, museums and libraries and unofficial and vernacular collections such as those found in junk stores, popular media locations and private residences.

Aporia, detail – ressentiment

Work ID: 15115

Description: Text
Ressentiment: "a self-poisoning of the mind...a lasting mental attitude caused by the systematic expression of certain emotions and affects which, as such, are normal components of human nature. Their repression leads to the constant tendency to indulge in certain kinds of value delusions and corresponding value judgments. The emotions and affects primarily concerned are revenge, hatred, malice, envy, the impulse to detract, and spite." None of these feelings necessarily leads to ressentiment. It develops "only if there occurs neither a moral self-conquest... nor an act or some other adequate expression of emotion...and if this restraint is caused by a pronounced awareness of impotence...Through its very origin, ressentiment is therefore chiefly confined to those who serve and are dominated at the moment, who fruitlessly resent the sting of authority ...the spiritual venom of ressentiment is extremely contagious." Max Scheler, Ressentiment, referred to by D. Kuspit, "Crowding the Picture -- Notes on American Activist Art Today," Artforum, May 1988, p. 117.

Description: Installation: Burnaby Art Gallery, Burnaby, BC. (left to right: daisy, bunny, lizard, crayflower, acanthus).

Using sources from the sixteenth century to the present, the exhibition examines some of the ironies, fantasies, delusions and romantic illusions that surround the representation, sometimes the self-representation, of women. The exhibition includes a number of large-scale works that the artist has created directly on the walls of the gallery during a residency at OBORO. In these, Amantea has used flock — a material commonly associated with bad taste, certain ethnic groups and social classes — to produce richly textured surfaces that underscore and draw out the pathologies and paradoxes of her source images and texts. In contrast to the scale of these works, the exhibition also features a new installation in which three video loops are seen in continuous projection in a series of thirty-one water globes. Utilizing film clips and figurines, the installation plays upon the intimacy of the miniature in scrutinizing the unreal, dreamlike yet often moving sentimentality that characterizes women in popular representation.

"Gisele Amantea's allusions to the paradigms of photography and film, to narrativity and mass culture, her use of decorative techniques and details, appropriated texts, cursive script and, recently, video, differentiate her work from what has been called high art. Although the subject matter, her choice of materials, the form of her work and its aesthetics are familiar, they are not traditionally valued: these matters and materials are usually associated with the feminine or the domestic, with minor art or craft forms, with kitsch or alternative cultural practices, rather than with the masculinist projects of high art and the avant-garde."
