CCCA Canadian Art Database

Sandra Gregson

Sandra Gregson works with painting, drawing, sculpture, and video, and at times, combines these mediums. Her work is about noticing everyday things, and events, in a playful, subtle, and critical way, and, with an intent of linking life and art. She often considers intersections between entities, such as nature and culture, knowing and not knowing, order and chaos, dissolution and becoming, remembering and forgetting. She holds a BFA from Nova Scotia of College of Art and Design, and an MFA from York University. Recently she relocated to Ottawa after living in Toronto for many years. She has exhibited her artwork across Canada and video work internationally. She was a founding member of The Red Head Gallery, Toronto.

Description: The frescos are made with a wood frame and with wire mesh to hold the fresco material. They are sized in reference to digital media, using either the same width/height ratio as a computer screen or the same as a television. The pigment, brushed through the openings of the patterned tissue, becomes fixed (and dries) into the surface of the wet fresco. Patterns and shapes are arranged in a configuration which suggests a face but is elusive in its identity.

My main concern for this series of work is how images and meaning are constructed through perceiving patterns of colour and light and dark. The notion of pattern recognition involves identifying a correspondence between a stimulus and information in memory. What interests me is how the perception of pattern, often with little information, triggers memory and allows the viewer to construct meaning. The frescos consider the ways we recognize, perceive and remember.
