Gordon Lebredt

The work of the late Winnipeg artist Gordon Lebredt is well known for its rigorous conceptualism and ambitious materiality. For more than 30 years Lebredt proposed ambitious, unwieldy, tangential, extreme, arid, brilliant architectural drawings. Lebredt was an artist, writer, theorist, scholar, and designer.

The divertissement (a brief performance between the acts of a play, a diversion) was arrived at by simulating the rotation of the interior of Cold City six degrees about a point located along one of its display walls. Black Interstice I & II

Work ID: 70545

Description: Constructed for the exhibition Implicating Possibilities, in collaboration with Yam Lau, Art Gallery of York University, North York, November 27, 1997 - January 25, 1998.

These two auto-constructions are the proxies of what must be understood as the difference- or distance-made-manifest between two repetitions—between the gallery (in this case Cold City) and itself insofar as it maintains its identity, its own openness as it were, only through deferral, that is, through division and repetition. As proxies they are the facsimiles of this deferral, and not the "castings" of some absence or what we might all too hastily refer to as negative space. The two supplementary partitions are Yam Lau's response to what you might call my delegates of spacing.

Photography: Peter MacCallum

Measurements: overall dimensions: 238.125 x 310.007 x 95.25 and 123.0122 x 310.007 x 38.735 cm respectively
