Jocelyne Belcourt Salem

Since 1985, Jocelyne Belcourt Salem has been discovered in regional and university galleries in Canada and abroad; his solo exhibitions have been numerous. From 1989 to 1994, his works were exhibited at the Workscene Gallery in Toronto. In 1993, she was a guest artist at the Linda Généreux Gallery also in Toronto. Group exhibitions give him visibility in numerous centers in Canada, Italy, Australia and more recently - again in Italy - with L'Enigma del Tempo in La Spezia. His bronze sculptural installation – in bas relief – “Bestiary” was designed for the sculpture garden of the Gulf Coast Museum of Art in Belleair, Florida. In August 1999, on the occasion of the Francophonie Summit and the Symposium of Contemporary Art in Moncton, Belcourt Salem created an environmental installation on the Pedicodiac River. His approach has often taken the form of installations using large format photography or integrating into large spaces. Over the years, his gaze has rested on a panoply of images and symbols ranging from dormitory beds, mattresses, chalk, to houses... According to the artist, these images will continue to appear. 'expand since they directly feed into her thematic exploration of memory. More recently, the artist favors the production of installations which integrate with more intimate geographies, with personal places, with domestic interiors which challenge him since they bear the traces of the people who have passed through them. Belcourt Salem is also interested in text and words as a substitute for the image: language having the capacity to elevate itself to an art object, thus offering a more accessible, more universal scope. With his most recent exhibition “Surface Tension”, we are in a meditative space, where an ephemeral atmosphere is highlighted. We are waiting. A video projection which – through the latex and the bodily movements which are exploited – plunges us into uncertainty, illusion, hesitation. Without struggles, without conflicts. Just the waiting and anticipation of a potential breakthrough. The theme of memory can be glimpsed in its inherent force.
