Robert Stacey

Robert Stacey was a Toronto-based freelance writer, editor, art historian and exhibition curator, specializing in historical and contemporary Canadian art and design. Among his numerous publications are The Canadian Poster Book: 100 Years of the Poster in Canada (Methuen, 1979); The Hand Holding the Brush: Self-Portraits by Canadian Artists (London Regional Art Gallery, 1983); Western Sunlight: C.W. Jefferys on the Canadian Prairies (Mendel Art Gallery, 1984); C.W. Jefferys (National Gallery of Canada, 1985); J.E.H. MacDonald: Designer (Ottawa: Carleton University Press, Archives of Canadian Art, 1996); and Canadian Bookplates (Toronto: Subway Books, 1997). He contributed essays to the catalogues of such exhibitions as The Big Show! Andrew King's Show Prints, 1919-1958 (Dunlop Art Gallery, Regina, 1987); Eighty/Twenty: 100 Years of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, 1988); Housing: A Right (The Power Plant, Toronto, 1990); Frances Anne Hopkins, 1838-1919: Canadian Scenery/Le paysage canadien (Thunder Bay Art Gallery, Thunder Bay, 1990); The True North: Canadian Landscape Painting, 1896-1939 (Lund Humphries/Barbican Art Gallery, London, 1991), A Public Room (Open Studio, Toronto, 1991); The Talented Intruder: Wyndham Lewis in Canada, 1939-45 (Art Gallery of Windsor, 1992); Robert Young: In My Small Pavilion (Atelier Gallery, Vancouver, 1993), Visions of Light and Air: Canadian Impressionism, 1885-1925 (Americas Society, New York, 1995), Massanoga: The Art of Bon Echo (Archives of Canadian Art, 1998), and North by South: The Art of Peleg Franklin Brownell (1853-1946) (Ottawa Art Gallery, Archives of Canadian Art and Design, 1998). In 1996-97 he guest-curated Varley: A Celebration for the Frederick Horsman Varley Art Gallery of Markham. He was writer-in-residence at the Winnipeg Art Gallery in November-December 1997.
