Biography (English): Edgar Heap of Birds has studied at the University of Kansas, Lawrence (BFA, 1976), undertaken graduate studies at the Royal College of Art, London (1977) and attended the Tyler School of Art, Philadelphia (MFA, 1979). He was named USA Ford Fellow in 2012 and Distinguished Alumni, University of Kansas, in 2014. Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts and Letters degrees have been awarded by the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Boston (2008), Emily Carr University of Art and Design, Vancouver, Canada (2017), and California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, (2018). In 2020, Heap of Birds was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences as a member of the Humanities & Arts class, with a specialty in Visual Arts. Heap of Birds has served as visiting lecturer in London, England; Western Samoa; Chiang Mai and Bangkok, Thailand; Johannesburg, South Africa; Barcelona, Spain; Belfast, Northern Ireland; Norrkoping, Sweden; Hararre, Zimbabwe; Verona, Italy; Adelaide, Australia; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Singapore; and Delhi and Vijayawada, India. He has taught at Yale University, Rhode Island School of Design and at the University of Oklahoma. He is retired from teaching at the University of Oklahoma after 30 years of service and is now Professor Emeritus in the Native American Studies Department. Professor Heap of Birds’ seminars explored contemporary Native American art issues within the visual arts, film, and museums on local, national, and international levels. The artists’ works are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, MN, among many others.

Biography (English): Avis Lang [Rosenberg] (1944-) is an art historian, teacher, curator, writer and editor who lived in Vancouver for many years. In 1972, as a member of the faculty of the Fine Art Department at the University of British Columbia, she wrote to Canadian artist Jack Chambers (1931-1978) beginning a correspondence that led Chambers to invite her contribution to a scholarly monograph on his work. In 1973, Peter Mellen took over the editorial direction for the book and differences of opinion prompted her to resign the project. Her essay, “The Hart of London: a film by Jack Chambers” was included in The Films of Jack Chambers, edited by Kathryn Elder (Cinematheque Ontario and Indiana State University Press, 2002). She now lives in New York City, where she has been an adjunct lecturer in English at the City University of New York and is currently a Research Associate at the Hayden Planetarium.

David Abecassis

Biography (English): David Abecassis works in painting, from life and photographs, from the private and public realm. Images are usually collaged, worked and evolve as the painting does. He has been exploring how memory connects us as people. He is interested in how our visual memory is conditioned by the quality of image technology available from a particular time. It could be the rendering of paint from the renaissance, black and white photography or a colour digital photo. David Abecassis completed undergraduate study at the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto, Canada in Sculpture/Installation and photography. He completed studies in art history and studio sculpture in Florence,Italy before receiving his MFA at York University. Past exhibitions include, Mercer Union Gallery in Toronto Canada, Field Projects Gallery in New York, the New York Armory and the Bronx River Art Center and The Painting Center in New York. He has taught art and shown independently and with artist collectives in galleries and artist run spaces in Canada and in New York. His painting continues to revolve around social aspects of identity and memory. He currently lives and works in New York.

Jennifer Angus

Biography (English): Jennifer Angus is a professor in the Design Studies Department at the University of Wisconsin -Madison where she teaches textile design, specifically, everything to do with the dyeing and printing of cloth, including natural dyes. She is an artist described by Art Daily as “one of the top contemporary installation artists in the country.” Jennifer creates some of the most provocative work most people have ever seen in an art museum setting. She composes patterns using hundreds of insects, placing them in arrangements that suggest wallpaper and textiles. Angus was one of nine leading contemporary artists selected for the landmark exhibition Wonder at the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery in 2015. Jennifer has been the recipient of numerous awards including Canada Council, Ontario Arts Council and Wisconsin Arts Board grants. More recently she received the inaugural Forward Art Prize, an unrestricted award for outstanding women artists of Wisconsin. At the University of Wisconsin-Madison she has received annual grants from the Graduate School, as well as the Vilas Associate Award, the Emily Mead Baldwin-Bascom Professorship in the Creative Arts, the Romnes Fellowship, the UW Arts Institute Creative Arts Award, Rothermel Bascom Professorship, the Kellett Mid-Career Faculty Researcher Award and most recently the Edna Wiechers Arts in Wisconsin Award. In 2013, Albert Whitman and Company, Chicago, published her first novel, In Search of Goliathus Hercules. At the University of Wisconsin – Madison she is the faculty leader of the Global Artisans Initiative which launched an interdisciplinary outreach program that connects students with artisans who have requested assistance with microenterprise development. The program leverages the relationships that University of Wisconsin has built over many years at global health field course sites in Ecuador, India, Kenya Mexico, Nepal and Vietnam to create a product design and marketplace system to support the economic wellbeing of local artisans.

Jordan Broadworth

Biography (English): Canadian artist Jordan Broadworth studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University prior to graduating from the University of Guelph’s Master of Fine Art program in 1997. Jordan Broadworth's paintings involve a process heavy, labor intensive and hands-on approach to making paintings that look decidedly hands-off. Each painting is made wet-into-wet, built-up in multiple layers and stripped back. The result is a smooth, uniform surface and a levelling between figure and ground, gesture and structure, chance and intention. The practice of viewing work on screens has changed how works are read and interpreted. Painting now leads a double life. Every physical work spawns a pixelated proxy. Painting plays defence for immediate experience while firmly planted in the mediated. This body of work acknowledges and gives form to this contradiction, playing in the gap between immediate and the mediated experience. His paintings are represented in public and corporate collections including: The Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, McKee Nelson LLP (NYC), TD Bank, Bank of Montreal, Remai Modern, Tom Thomson Art Gallery, Peel Art Gallery and Dalhousie Art Gallery. Chen’s artwork has been shown across North and South America, East Asia and Europe at venues and festivals including the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, The Power Plant, Toronto, Centre Culturel Canadien, Paris, Centro Nacional des las Artes, Mexico City, The Contemporary Austin, Shanghai Expo, Hong Kong Asian Film Festival, Toronto Nuit Blanche, and FILE-Rio: Electronic Language International Festival, Rio de Janeiro. Her work is in several public collections including the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, University of Colorado Art Museum, Art Bank of Canada Council for the Arts, Canadian Pacific Railway, and Toronto Transit Commission, and she has produced a number of permanent public art commissions. Among her awards is a Chalmers Fellowship through the Ontario Arts Council to produce an audio-video based on two river journeys on the Niagara and the Yangtze. Her writing has appeared in publications in the U.K., Canada, the U.S. and China. Chen is a Professor in the Department of Art, University at Buffalo. Her work is represented by Anna Kaplan Contemporary.

Aleesa Cohene

Biography (English): Aleesa Cohene is a Canadian visual artist. They studied at York University (Philosophy and Religion) and the Toronto Film School (Editorial) and completed a fellowship at the Kunsthochschule für Medien, Cologne, under the mentorship of German experimental filmmaker Matthias Müller in 2010. Cohene also holds a Master's of Visual Studies from the University of Toronto (2013). Cohene's practice explores appropriation in media arts, sculpture, and scent, reflecting on broader conversations around the production and circulation of cultural material. Cohene typically works with found materials, scavenging, replicating, and remixing images, sounds, and objects. Their work explores the questions these practices provoke—about transgression, intervention, cultural appropriation, ownership, property, and power. Their work has been shown in major Canadian museums and galleries in multiple provinces including The Power Plant (Ontario), Contemporary Calgary, MacKenzie Art Gallery (Saskatchewan), and Confederation Centre Art Gallery (PEI). They have been awarded residencies in Canada, the U.S., Denmark, and the Netherlands, and their work has screened internationally. The 2017 project I Don't Get It was commissioned by three major Canadian institutions (The Western Front, The Rooms, and Gallery 44 Centre for Contemporary Photography) for a solo exhibition tour across Canada. Cohene's work is part of the permanent collection of Oakville Galleries, and has been acquired by private collectors. In 2021, Cohene founded the multidisciplinary creative agency I Know You Know, which works with arts and cultural institutions, artists, scholars and culturally conscious businesses and brands. The agency works with a team of international artists and designers to produce visual identities, digital projects, publications, and environments.
