Seeing A Bear

Description: Moving camp is an important facet of the traditional nomadic, hunting lifestyle. The ability to 'move with the caribou' and to take advantage of seasonal hunting grounds was crucial. During the winter, the komatik, or sled, and dog team played a necessary role. In summer, the kayak and larger umiak, often referred to as a 'woman's' boat, were used. Joe Talirunili has carved many migration scenes of umiaks, which are sometimes referred to as 'Joe Boats', filled with people and supplies. Despite the artist's harrowing, childhood experience, having survived a shipwreck and then trying to reach safety in a make-shift umiak, The Migration, 1976, is a lively depiction of the subject for which Talirunili has become famous. Pitsik's place [is also identified]. They worked on the rocks; their boss was Kalirasi. This pole was taken to Inoucdjouac [Inukjuak] from Great Whale River [Kuujjuaraapik]. When I came to Inoucdjouac [Inukjuak], in June, I worked at this store. The very first houses in Inoucdjouac [Inukjuak] were those of the Hudson's Bay Company."
