Description: Public Art Commission.
Bloorview Kids Rehab, 150 Kilgour Road, Toronto, ON.
Architect: Montgomery Sisam
Photo: Amir Gavriely
One of three Public Art Installations by Carl Taçon & Jeannie Thib (Field Study,, Landmarks, et Sky Map) commissioned by Bloorview Kids Rehab in Toronto. The emphasis of these three commissions was to establish a dialogue with the children who inhabit the facility, in a playful and educational manner, that addressed issues specific to the surrounding natural ravine site. All three commissions were linked conceptually by dealing with notions of mapping.
Landmarks composed of a topographical map of the Bloorview Kids Rehab site and the adjoining ravine lands, sandblasted into natural cleft slate with white highlighting. Within the area of the Bloorview Kids Rehab property on this map, contemporary and historic fossil images have been carved into honed blackboard slate, from which the visiting and resident children can take paper and graphite rubbings.

The limestone relief carving, Field Study, is 2 feet high and 16 feet long and is located in the main entrance foyer. It is comprised of two parallel friezes. The upper level, carved in deep relief, is a collection of enlarged portions of botanical illustrations of plants indigenous to the area. The lower level brings together scientific diagrams of natural phenomena related to plant growth, carved in shallow planar relief. The overall visual effect is of a continuum of pattern.

Sky Map consists of a 3' high x 20' wide chalkboard slate installation onto which a sky map of the Northern Hemisphere has been sandblasted into the surface. Diamond shapes pierce though the slate to make up the star chart of each constellation, so that light passing through will "illuminate the stars". Sandblasted lines connect the stars that are surrounded by sandblasted illustrations of historic constellation figures.

One of three Public Art Installations by Carl Taçon & Jeannie Thib (Field Study, Landmarks, et Sky Map) commissioned by Bloorview Kids Rehab in Toronto. The emphasis of these three commissions was to establish a dialogue with the children who inhabit the facility, in a playful and educational manner, that addressed issues specific to the surrounding natural ravine site. All three commissions were linked conceptually by dealing with notions of mapping.

Passage (detail)
Artist: Carl Taçon
ID : 70989
Description: Commissioned by Darchei Noam Synagogue, North York, ON.
Architect: Quadrangle Architects Limited
Photo: Amir Gavriely
Passage continues an interest in working with drapery imagery carved in stone. This preoccupation stems from an investigation of drapery as a skin, membrane or facade that is indicative of a transitional space. The visual ambiguity of the fold accompanied by the rich cross-cultural significance of cloth as a separation from inside and outside, warmth and cold, public and private, allows for this type of imagery to assimilate the context and meaning of its surroundings. Specifically, drapery is suggestive of a passage to something beyond. In this manner, it leads one into the official entrance of Congregation Darchei Noam.

Shift (view from Charles Street)
Artist: Carl Taçon
ID : 70969
Description: International Public Art Commission.
One St. Thomas Residences, 1 St. Thomas Street, Toronto, ON.
Architect: Robert A. M. Stern Architects
Photo: Peter Legris
Shift consists of 20 individually carved marble sections of drapery with a total length of 136 feet, height 52 inches. Balancing classical imagery with contemporary pictorial experience, this hand carved marble wall delineates the property line of One St. Thomas Street as a mutable divide. Rather than rendering one long image of draped cloth in stone along this border, the cloth imagery has been fragmented, moving it away from a literal reading to a sequenced sampling of cloth images, producing a cinematic effect.
