Description: Photo: Ken Mayer. Artist's statement: This mixture constitutes a rich mix of past and present, functional and decorative ceramic. Mirror pieces and found glass shards are also used to reflect the viewer and to add sparkle. The figures are life related-not life like. The focus is on geometry and posture. They have a "stick" or totemic quality. Their names are derived form my use of face casts of individual people for the faces of the bodies. Description: Photo: Sally Michener.
Artist's statement: Two wood doors are totally clad by ceramic tiles. They are joined to create an inner space by a wood floor also covered with ceramic tile. This piece is to be entered and experienced from inside with a sense of a "hot box". On one interior side there is a life size female, the opposite side has a male figure. They are composed of ceramic tiles using words and familiar objects, and enough mirror to reflect the viewer(s). Words such as who, art, play, work, why, self, life; objects: heart, apple, telephone, and bike, flower. (06 glazes) The words and objects are ceramic bits made specifically by me for this piece. Other tiles are largely commercial but the ceramic tile mosaic mixture includes shards found on the tidal banks of the Fraser River "sally ann" finds, and pieces from friends, former students and myself. On the floor and outer surfaces the tiles make reference to pattern and domestic space (e.g. shape of a house).
Note: Le ceramic tile used in many of these works is a rich mix of tiles made specifically by me, unglazed terra cotta or glazed, shards from "gifts" from other ceramic artist's works, "found objects" purchased at the Salvation Army, odd pieces from family cupboards, shards found on the banks of the Fraser River and the city dump, commercial tile both purchased and free remnants, and mirror.

Bare Bones I, detail 1 of 2
Artist: Sally Michener
ID : 8461
Description: Photo: Sally Michener.
Artist's statement: This is the beginning of a series of columns. A much finer, smaller tile is used than in previous works like Looking Box or Alice, Donna et al. This work is very labour intensive. (Lots more cutting, fitting). I begin with a black tile line drawing of a skeleton, which wraps around the rectangular or triangular columns. I then add interior body parts such as stomach, eyes, hipbones, and heart which are non literal and playful in mood. They are not realist but images refer the viewer to life functions, inside and out. Inspired by early Roman skeletal mosaics and Day of the Dead skeletons in Mexico and Spain. They are hopefully pleasing visually with bright colours, pattern and whimsical use of body imagery. Perhaps: an aging artist thinking more about internal health and spiritual issues.

Herstory / History
Artist: Sally Michener
ID : 8459
Description: Photo: Sally Michener.
Artist's statement: A black and white ceramic tile game board with computer generated ceramic decals (018) for text to encourage a non-verbal conversation between players. Four Ikea cups labelled with either Herstory or History (again computer generated ceramic decals, cone 018) are used as markers or game pieces and allow various assortment of gender for the players. Text includes feeling frisky, mad as hell, sorry, maybe later, yes!, game over, your turn, slightly kinky, just kidding, thank you, trust, pass go, game over, and so on. (36 spaces) Concept developed in collaboration with Alf Bogusky (at that time director of the Vancouver Art Gallery) for an exhibit called Collaborations</i< for the Canadian Craft Museum and made/crafted by me.

Bare Bones I, detail 2 of 2
Artist: Sally Michener
ID : 8462

Artist's statement: This piece was made with soft slabs with low fire white talc body and glazed at 06. The Actor is part of a series of 4 figures inspired by a small porcelain 17th century piece in theArt Gallery of Greater Victoria. Self Portrait
Artist: Sally Michener
ID : 8476
Description: Photo: Trevor Mills.
Artist's statement: White talc clay is used to make slabs. This column is made of body parts, vegetables, fish, Barbie doll and a cup all made with press moulds. They were fired at 04 and assembled in a non-literal manner to create a 'self-portrait'. (My head is the "foot" of the piece and my "hair" is a cabbage leaf. I had been invited by an ECIAD (Emily Carr Institute of Art + Design) student to participate with her in a faculty/student exhibit Beyond the Surface in the Charles Scott Gallery, ECIAD, Vancouver. She brought her moulds to my studio and we each created a Self-Portrait column and the pair were shown together. Both were painted white. We decided to not use colour, as the forms were so complex.

Description: Photo: Bill Koropatnick.
Artist's statement: Slab, coil and press mould construction. Made in pieces and stacked together over a metal base/rod. I used moulds for body parts e.g. hand, face, heart, breast, and fruit/vegetable/decorative motifs. I was thinking about how we are all pieced together from strange, unconnected experiences and events of life. The pieces are organized according to a felt sense of belonging. They are about growth and development in a playful, imagined fashion. They were exhibited together as a formal cluster.

Bare Bones V and VI, detail 3 of 3
Artist: Sally Michener
ID : 8471
Description: Photo: Sally Michener.
Artist's statement: Part of a series of columns. They are made in the same way as Bare Bones III/IV. In addition I made small tiles with words: e.g. made, craft, why, who, paradigm, concept, mask, face, body, feel, touch which are a new part of the ceramic tile mosaic and other shapes of familiar objects: e.g. light bulb, dog, spiral, house, flower, hand. This assortment added a form of sign language to the expressive voice embodied in the work. These column bodies also have a dog: Sophie in the imaginary. Best friends. I hope the surface "text" includes more suggestions on the questions of life in the here and now, past and future.
