Flammable

Artist: Vincent Trasov

Work ID: 71028

Description: I began my career as an artist in 1969 with Copper Sulphate works on paper exposed to heat. The first paintings were related to performance with flammable materials. The first of these performances took place at the SUB Building, University of British Columbia on May 16, 1969 and was called Flammable, a fire process event. There I ignited a pile of 16 flammable objects, to observe how they burned. My palette consisted of materials such as gasoline and gunpowder.

At this time I was interested in Yves Klein, who had made fire paintings in 1961. Klein's statement about "a new earthly paradise where climate would be controlled and property unmaterialized and petty differences in the political, economic and social spheres will cease to drain the energies of man" greatly appealed to me.
