Tony Urquhart

First Name: Tony

Biography (English): Tony was born in 1934 in Niagara Falls (Ontario) where his grandmother ran a funeral home with the help of his parents. Starting in 1954, he studied at the Albright Art School, at the State University of New York, Buffalo, where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in 1958. In 1955, he also attended the Yale Norfolk Summer School in New Haven. He became the first artist-in-residence at the University of Western Ontario, London, in 1960 and taught from1967. Urquhart then became full professor of Fine Art at the University of Waterloo (Ontario) in 1972, teaching drawing, painting and printmaking. He also served periodically as the head of that department until his retirement in 1999. Tony currently lives and works in Stratford, Ontario. Tony Urquhart gained recognition early in his career as an abstract painter, exhibiting at the famed Isaacs Gallery in Toronto when he was only 22. He also exhibited with renowned London group that included Jack Chambers, Greg Curnoe and Murray Favro. Starting in the 1960s he also followed an independent path with his intricate 'box' sculptures. Throughout his career, however, drawing has been central to Urquhart’s art. Various authors including his wife Jane Urquhart, Michael Ondaatje, Matt Cohen and Louis Dudek have chosen his drawings to illustrate their books. He was one of the founders of CAR/FAC (Canadian Artists Representation), that successfully established a fee structure for public museum and gallery exhibitions of contemporary artists. Tony Urquhart was named to the Order of Canada in 1995. He passed away in January 2022. Videoportraits Tony Urquhart [Gordon Hawkins, Photographer, 2018].

Dieter Grund

First Name: Dieter

Biography (English): Words contained in images have always been important to Dieter Grund. His early drawings demonstrate an interesting and playful relationship using words and images. At York University Eugenio Tellez introduced him to S.W. Hayter's printmaking and Dennis Rowan's aquatint method. Tweaked along the way by David Bolduc, Keiichi Hayano, Vincent Sharp and John Snow, Grund's commitment to printmaking deepened and in 1978 he established Presswerk Editions. Through collaborations with artists, poets, photographers and performance artists his Griffin press has been a stalwart, generous and accommodating companion, allowing for a wide range of sizes in the many projects emerging from its press bed. Personal artistic interests led Dieter Grund to embark on projects that allowed him to explore the limits of his printing process. From impressions of deer hooves for Toby MacLennan to creating the atmospheric colour blends of Rita Letendre in an etching and learning photogravure, he slowly built skills to better explore the possibilities of crushing ink into paper. Copper plate and wood plank became the matrices that yielded the most personally satisfying results, allowing Grund to explore projects that straddle handmade books and limited-edition prints equally. His collaboration on text and design-related projects with Bill Morgan of Lunar Caustic Press in the early 1980s piqued an interest in handmade books, which remains a strong element in Dieter Grund's own work and studio collaborations to the present. The Presswerk Editions studio catalogue reveals repeated collaboration with artists such as David Bolduc and Tony Calzetta, whose work with writers brings a fresh view to both the writing and the images.

Steve Gouthro

First Name: Steve

Biography (English): A respected artist and teacher, Steve Gouthro has influenced many young artists with his careful compositions, large-scale, figurative paintings and detailed cross-hatched drawings and prints. Gouthro's work celebrates the mystical, symbolic and allegorical references of everyday life. His realist painting, sometimes called magical, is underscored by careful drawing and complex figurative compositions. Gouthro has explored the urban view, the cityscape, classical sculpture, garden imagery and the nature of work and history in previous bodies of work. His oil-painted surfaces are super-layered. A delicately rendered face, a convincing illusion of depth, and a shimmery surface of light and pattern catch our attention. This May, Gouthro is the artist in residence at The Winnipeg Art Gallery (WAG) with scheduled public lectures and workshops and time for private critiques. Gouthro's work is on view at the WAG's Art Rental and Sales Gallery all summer. Two of his paintings, Waiting and Waiting Outside, and smaller drawings are featured in a two-person exhibition at Winnipeg's Site Gallery June 1 to 28, 2003.

Joan Frick

First Name: Joan

Biography (English): Joan Frick. Frick was a graduate of École des Beaux-Arts de l’Université de Montréal with a Master of Fine Arts, avec Prix, in 1963. Her own words: “Of pertinent and long-standing value to my maturity as an artist are my continued studies in physics, mathematics and astronomy in addition to art, its masters and concepts, and my design experience in architecture and urban planning.” In her artwork, Frick “takes the technological principles of still film photography for a creative alternative ride with her handheld camera drawing lines in its space. Shooting her composition at the same time creating it – as directly as pen-nib to paper – Joan Frick draws her lines with a point of non-static light in the dark, moving her camera at will to form the lines, various in length, colour, angle and sweep that compose her art.”

Biography (French): Jeanne Frick.

Frances Ferdinands

First Name: Frances

Biography (English): Frances Ferdinands is a Canadian artist. She holds a Visual Arts degree from York University, an A.R.C.T. (Piano) from the Royal Conservatory of Music, and Education degree from University of Toronto. As a young Art student she was co-editor of Eclectic Eve: a Collection of Fifty Interviews with Toronto Women Artists. (Coach House Press, 1973). Noted American art historian and critic Lucy Lippard wrote, “Eclectic Eve is a book I’ve often used and much enjoyed. I wish other cities would do the same.” Ferdinands’ paintings are featured in two Artbooks: Rethinking Acrylic” (Northlight Books, 2008) and Acrylic Innovation (Northlight Books, 2010). She created the winning design for the 2017 Diwali commemorative coin and the 2019 Gold Multi-Cultural Coin “celebrating Diversity and Light” for the Royal Canadian Mint. Ferdinands has exhibited her work for over three decades across Canada and the United States and as far afield as New York, Paris, Bogota, London, and Honolulu. She is the recipient of many Arts Council Grants. Her paintings are held in private, corporate, and museum collections. In 2015 and 2017, Ferdinands returned to her homeland to be mentored in traditional arts and crafts studying temple mural painting, bobbin lace making, and mask making. This experience served to enrich her understanding of her Sri Lankan heritage and sense of place within it. The experience also spawned new work including the “Atomizer” collection – a series of 10 works which the ROM purchased. Her most recent paintings, the “Cultural Intersections” series hover between representation and abstraction and feature a mix of Western, Middle Eastern, and South Asian imagery and patterning. Colourful, active and densely layered they celebrate within a contemporary framework the long and overlapping traditions of decoration and craftsmanship that are the underpinnings of many non-western cultures. In early 2019 she was awarded a Chalmers Fellowship to travel to London England to study Islamic Patterning. The knowledge gained further expanded her focus on the exploration of visual cultural differences and cross-cultural fertilization and speaks of the “in-between” of varied social and cultural realities she inhabits.

(Coach House Press, 1973).

Geoffrey Farmer

First Name: Geoffrey

Biography (English): Geoffrey Farmer is best known for extensive multimedia installations made of cut-out images which form collages. His first figurative work was Trailer (2002), a large reproduction of a transport truck’s trailer, part reality (dirt covers the surface, and mud is splattered across the gas tank) and part artifice (the trailer looks like a movie prop). He followed this with many figurative works such as The Last Two Million Years (2007), The Idea and the Absence of the Idea (2008), The Surgeon and the Photographer (2009) (Vancouver Art Gallery), made of 365 three-dimensional collages, and Leaves of Grass (2012) (National Gallery of Canada), an installation 124 feet long, of more than 15,000 images cut from 50 years of Life magazine, arranged chronologically on stalks of dried grass. He viewed The Surgeon and the Photographer, along with The Last Two Million Years (2007) and Leaves of Grass (2012) as a trilogy of installations, based on the accumulation of images. Farmer`s first group exhibition took place in 1995 in Mexico. His first solo exhibition took place in Vancouver at Or Gallery. Since then, his exhibition history has been extensive, with shows nationally, and abroad. For dOCUMENTA (13) in 2012, Farmer produced Leaves of Grass. In 2015, he had a large mid-career retrospective co-curated by himself and Daina Augaitis at the Vancouver Art Gallery in which he used items from the Gallery’s artist archives to create installations that filled the entire gallery space. The exhibition was titled How Do I Fit This Ghost in My Mouth. In 2017, he represented Canada at the 57th Venice Biennale, in Venice with a show titled A Way Out of the Mirror. In 2017, he also had a show titled The Care With Which The Rain Is Wrong, at the Schinkel Pavillon, Berlin, Germany in which he used art monographs and his own digital library of illustrations and collection of sounds for his installations. He is represented by Catriona Jeffries, Vancouver.

Il conçoit The Surgeon and the Photographer, ainsi que The Last Two Million Years (2007) et Leaves of Grass (2012) comme une trilogie d'installations, basée sur l'accumulation d'images. A Way Out of the Mirror. En 2017, il a également présenté une exposition intitulée The Care With Which The Rain Is Wrong, au Schinkel Pavillon de Berlin, en Allemagne, dans laquelle il a utilisé des monographies d'art et sa propre bibliothèque numérique d'illustrations et une collection de sons pour ses installations. Andy Fabo

First Name: Andy

Biography (English): Andy Fabo is an artist, art critic, independent curator, AIDS activist and art educator. In 2005 he was given a retrospective at the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, an exhibition that featured his work over thirty years in diverse media. His art has ranged from a series of mixed media paintings, Studs, exhibited in his 1979 A Space exhibition – a landmark for Queer Art in Canada – to his collaborative videos work created with Michael Balser his current evolution into digital media. He was a founding member of the nationally influential ChromaZone collective (1981-85), a group that revived the body as subject matter in painting and drawing, as well as reviving representational and social issues in those practices. Andy Fabo was first diagnosed as HIV+ in 1986, the year that the test was initially available in Canada. This was also the year that his lover, Tim Jocelyn, a textile artist and curator, died of HIV related infections. Tim Jocelyn and Andy Fabo collaborated on a landmark show, Chromaliving, that presented a mutated artists’version of a department store in 10,000 square feet of retail space on a prime retail street in Toronto and featured at least 300 artists, creating artist-made furniture, clothing, accessories and installations. In the mid-nineties he had his first AIDS-defining opportunistic infection, pneumocystis (carinii) jiroveci pneumonia, but was fortunate that the multi-drug protocol had been developed by the time his HIV infection had begun taking a physical toll. Andy Fabo was one of the first artist working in painting and drawing who responded to the AIDS pandemic, making several bodies of work that dealt with the body in crisis, loss and memorializing, exploring affect and the visceral in the light of catastrophic bodily experience. In some exhibitions, like Diagnosis (1991), he took a less subjective and more activist and informational approach to the AIDS crisis. A year after the demise of Tim Jocelyn, Andy Fabo met video artist Michael Balser and they began a series of collaborative media projects over a span of fifteen years. One of their first projects was a video work, Survival of the Delirious (1988), that won numerous awards including Best New Narrative at the Atlanta Film Festival, was highlighted at the International Kijkhuis Media Festival in Den Hague Holland and it is included in the Art Against AIDS anthology that VTape and Video Data Bank in Chicago co-produced in 1989. It is in the collections of museums around the world including the National Gallery of Canada and the MOMA in NYC. Blood Risk, a video work by the couple that was a restaging of Cocteau’s Blood of a Poet in the wake of the AIDS pandemic also show extensively internationally, including Artists Space in NYC (1990).

Romany Eveleigh

First Name: Romany

Biography (English): Romany Eveleigh came from an artistic background: she was the daughter of painter and designer Henry Rowland Eveleigh and the artist’s model Ivy Florence Beasley. Her works on paper glued to canvas – Pages (1973) and Tri-Part (1974) – take their visual cue, materials, and techniques from the written and printed page. The Pages drawings are characterised by the repetition of the letter “o”, which fills the square support in columns of vertical text, creating irregular bands of faint colour, so that from a distance these abstract works appear as the pages of a book or printed media. Eveleigh’s practice is produced as writing but does not communicate a message. Rather, the fields of flat colour covering the surface of the page are a reminder of the gesture of the artist’s hand and have been likened to the work of colour field painters. Despite the all- over text, the effect is a pared-down sparseness that the artist has remarked upon as “not a sought-after end but a sought-for beginning.” She was exhibited at the Venice Biennial in 2024.

Eiko Emori

First Name: Eiko

Biography (English): Eiko Emori RCA earned a Masters degree of Fine Arts at Yale University and a Diploma in Design at the London Central School of Arts & Crafts. She also studied in France at Académie Grand Chaumière and worked as a graphic designer in Tokyo, New York and Toronto. She came to Canada in her mid-twenties, settling at first in Toronto and finally in Ottawa. Eiko’s graphic design expertise is in book design, including type and typography. In the 1990s, she returned to Tokyo to support her mother. At that time, the glassmaking craft was located in a ward of Tokyo and Eiko took advantage of the opportunity to learn more about these arts. Following classes offered at a glass factory, she became enamoured of the pâte de verre process. When she returned to Canada, she carried on with this interest, refining her skills. As member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, and Graphic Designers of Canada, Eiko continued in her graphic design business in Ottawa. She also began to develop her skills in working with glass, a process totally different from print media, in which the final product closely resembles the final sketch. She explains that working with pâte de verre is a collaborative process between the artist and the glass. In 2021, Eiko’s work was recognized by the Pattie Walker Memorial Award for excellence in architectural glass from Crafts Ontario and has also received an Ontario Arts Council Individual Craft Project Grant.

Selwyn Dewdney

First Name: Selwyn

Biography (English): Selwyn Hanington Dewdney was a Canadian writer, illustrator, artist, activist and pioneer in both art therapy and pictography. In 1936, he began teaching at Sir Adam Beck Secondary School, London, Ontario, but resigned in protest at the demotion of a colleague in 1945. This experience was the subject of his first novel, Wind Without Rain. One of the first London artists to paint abstracts in the 1940s and early 1950s, Dewdney painted a number of murals on commission for several clients, including Sir Adam Beck Collegiate and Victorian Hospital. With a growing family of three sons, he turned to illustrating books, writing, researching, editing and painting commissioned murals to support them. It was during this time that he became interested in art therapy when he was commissioned to illustrate Lionel Penrose's psychiatric 'M' test. In 1947, while working at Westminster Veterans Hospital in London, he began giving art instruction to some to the psychiatric patients. The positive results of this eventually afforded him the position of Psychiatric Art Therapist. He and his wife Irene were pioneers in the field of Canadian art therapy. His work, and particularly his wife's, led to the development of an art therapy training program at the University of Western Ontario in 1986.

Sylvain Cousineau

First Name: Sylvain

Biography (English): Sylvain Cousineau exhibited his work regularly since the mid seventies. The most familiar objects, if presented in a particular way and examined with fresh eyes, often seem to possess an altered significance, to be charged with new meaning. This simple fact, which reflects the dynamics inherent to all creative endeavour, takes on a singular force and heightened relief in the work of Sylvain P. Cousineau. This artistic practice evolving steadily over a period of more than forty years, is rich and varied (photographs, paintings, assemblages), and expressed in a tone and spirit of remarkable consistency. Cousineau’s essentially figurative painting focused initially on four apparently innocuous themes or motifs – a ship, a vase of flowers, a teapot and a birthday cake – that the artist reworked over the years from different perspectives and according to different moods. The use of certain formal devices, also recurrent and frequently highly connotative (drips, brushstrokes, dots of colour), imbues the work with a powerfully reflective dimension, while also endowing it with a marked emotional charge. In an approach that is both profound and playful, and in a tone marked by certain humour, Cousineau’s explorations centre primarily on the actual creation of art and, its relations with the world. Broad and all-encompassing, this approach nevertheless avoids orthodoxy and the rigid self-referentiality that modernity has sometimes imposed on the work of art (art about art). Although easily recognizable and accessible to all, the ideas and objects represented in Cousineau’s painting nevertheless carry multiple meanings. We need only think, for example, of the four elements (water, fire, earth and air) – considered in ancient times as the basic components of all things… For instance, all the objects serve as the container of source of another body: smoke comes out of the ship’s funnel; gifts emerge from the birthday cake; flowers seem to burst forth from the vase; and steam escapes from the spout of the teapot. These images, which evoke the idea of transformation, are not unrelated to that other phenomenon of transformation ( of an object or a viewpoint) that constitutes artistic creation; they thus play a metaphorical role in relation to the conditions and concerns of this practice.

Dennis Burton

First Name: Dennis

Biography (English): Dennis Burton was a Canadian modernist painter. He won a scholarship to Pickering College in Newmarket, and then attended the Ontario College of Art (OCAD), studying with Jock Macdonald and Fred Hagan. He worked as a graphic designer for the Canadian Broadcasting Company until 1960 when he began painting full-time. An exhibition in 1955 of Painters Eleven at Toronto's Hart House (today the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery, Art Museum at the University of Toronto) which he visited with his friend, artist Gordon Rayner, turned him towards abstraction. But it was their visit to the Albright Knox Museum in Buffalo NY (now called the Buffalo AKG Art Museum), where they first saw the American abstractionists: Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Clyfford Still and others, that really turned them around, and on returning to Toronto both Burton and Rayner painted their first abstract paintings. Under the influence of the neo-Dada movement current in Toronto in the late 1950s and first half of the 1960s, Burton began to create sculpture using scrap metal and found materials welded together. He showed his work with Toronto's Isaacs Gallery (1961, 1962, 1965). For this reason, he has been called part of the Isaacs Group of artists, which include, among others, Michael Snow, Joyce Wieland, John Meredith and Graham Coughtry. Burton had a number of public commissions, among them a mural for the Edmonton Airport in 1963. He is best known for the Garterbeltmania works of females in their underwear which he showed with the Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa in his retrospective in 1977. With artists such as Joyce Wieland, he explored the erotic in Canadian art.

Ron Bloore

First Name: Ronald

Biography (English): Ron Bloore was born near Toronto in 1925. At the University of Toronto he studied Art and Archeology and wrote about ancient Chinese bronzes in 1949. He did post-graduate studies in New York at NYU in the early fifties. He finished his MA at Washington University and went to the Courtauld Institute in London and Paris to pursue a PHD, but in ‘57 he went back to Toronto to just teach. As he studied and taught, he painted and he drew in a fashionably abstract mode. In the summer of ’58 Bloore painted his first fully non-figurative work. “It was like bursting through the sound barrier,” he said. “Complete freedom. I knew I could paint that way - non-representationally - from that point on.” He left behind the abstractions of his youth and the expressionism he saw in New York for good. His new work featured bold composition, strong colour and striking uses of texture accomplished with paint scrapers, not with brushes, and stove-pipe enamel on panel. That fall Bloore was brought to Regina, Saskatchewan to teach and paint and direct the MacKenzie Art Gallery and in this latter capacity he brought himself, his gallery and four local fellow painters to national recognition. In 1961 the National Gallery mounted the group show Five Painters from Regina which travelled across the country. Soon Bloore had a solo show in Toronto, juried shows across the country and was included in international shows in London, Madrid and San Paolo. He received an Arts Council grant to spend 1962-3 in Greece. His extensive travels from there culminated in a trip to Egypt which inspired a second breakthrough. Relief. No more colour. He summarily destroyed all the work he had done on the trip and, back in Regina, destroyed most of his paintings there. It was the dawn of the “white-on-white” period. These were white oil paintings with minimal imagery and a sculpted surface with thick relief. Bloore moved back to Toronto in 1966 to teach at York University. In the following years He was very productive, including large mural commissions and was widely collected. He became an influential commentator giving many public talks, writing in artscanada magazine and serving on many juries. He advocated a new art which was aspirational not critical, questing not questioning. Retiring from teaching in 1986 freed Bloore for a 32 painting series of monumental works and a major retrospective which travelled across Canada. Through the nineties, he continued in the same mode but on a reduced scale, still mainly white and still with sculpted elements but with strong illusions of spacial depth as well. 2003 saw the fading away of white, the return of colours and the dark brown masonite, which had begun to show through the white, soon took over the field entirely. Bloore had found what he called “an old man’s style,” a shocking transformation and an aesthetic success which took him to the end of his days. He died in 2009.

ᓗᒃ ᐊᖑᐊᓗᖅ Luke Anguhadluq

First Name: ᓗᒃ ᐊᖑᐊᓗᖅ Luke

Biography (English): Luke Anguhadluq was an Inuk printmaker and graphic artist from Tariunnuaq [Chantrey Inlet], NU. He spent the majority of his life living on the land in an Utkuhikhalingmiut camp until later in life when he relocated to ᖃᒪᓂᑦᑐᐊᖅ / Qamani’tuaq [Baker Lake], NU. At 73, Anguhadluq began drawing exploring themes of hunting, drum dancing and community. In 1969 a printmaking program was introduced in ᖃᒪᓂᑦᑐᐊᖅ / Qamani’tuaq and Anguhadluq’s drawings were quickly transformed into prints. Over 80 of Anguhadluq's artworks were featured in the Baker Lake Print Collection. His earlier works from 1960-1969 were composed using graphite, felt-tip pen and coloured pencil. Human figures from this early period are generally silhouetted in dark colours, though this style does reappear in later works such as String Game (1973). From 1970-1982, Anguhadluq gained access to higher quality paper as well as a larger range of coloured pencils and ink and as a result he incorporated more colour into his compositions. He also increasingly added more details to his works such as tattoos and decorative clothing. Anguhadluq also began incorporating multiple perspectives into his work, moving away from narratives that happened on a linear plane and beginning to portray larger groups of people. The drawing Drum Dance (1970) prominently features a top-down view of the activity concentrated around the drum. Anguhadluq has an accomplished artistic legacy. In 1976 he shared an exhibition space with his wife Marion Tuu'luq at the Winnipeg Art Gallery titled Tuu’luq/Anguhadluq. In 1993 the Art Gallery of Ontario organized a solo exhibit of Anguhadluq’s work titled From the Centre: The Drawings of Luke Anguhadluq, held in Ottawa at the National Gallery of Canada.

Gisele Amantea

First Name: Gisele

Biography (English): Gisele Amantea lives in Montreal where she taught in the Studio Arts program at Concordia University from 1995 to 2012. Amantea's work is known for its interdisciplinary focus and innovative use of a variety of materials, formats and processes to explore questions related to gender, class, nostalgia, history, memory and the relationship of private and public space. Media in which she has made work ranges from sculpture, drawing, wallpaper and textiles to video and bookworks. At the same time, her practice has had a strong research base in the sense that work is often made in response to, provoked or generated by a specific context or place, and depends, to some extent, on research undertaken in these locations. This includes making on-site observations, visiting official repositories of history such as archives, museums and libraries and unofficial and vernacular collections such as those found in junk stores, popular media locations and private residences.
