Barry Ace

First Name: Barry

Last Name: Ace

Biography (English): Barry Ace is a practicing multidisciplinary artist currently living in Ottawa. He is a debendaagzijig (citizen) of M’Chigeeng First Nation, Odawa Mnis (Manitoulin Island), Ontario, Canada. Ace’s work responds to the impact of the digital age and how it exponentially transforms and infuses Anishinaabeg culture (and other global cultures) with new technologies and new ways of communicating. His work attempts to harness and bridge the precipice between historical and contemporary knowledge, art, and power, while maintaining a distinct Anishinaabeg aesthetic connecting generations. “My visual art practice is a response to the impact of the digital age and how it exponentially transforms and infuses Anishinaabeg culture with new technologies and new ways of communicating. My work is known for its signature style of transformation and recontextualization of traditional objects drawn from historic Anishinaabeg material culture, such as textiles. I deliberately push the boundaries of cultural art practices such as beadwork by transforming antiquated electronic e-waste, primarily capacitors, resistors, and light-emitting diodes to create new and complex floral motifs that mirror traditional Anishinaabeg style glass beadwork. Through an up-cycling of e-waste, I carefully yet respectfully negotiate the tenuous line of cultural continuity and strive to maintain a distinct Anishinaabeg aesthetic as an intentional response to the advance of technological colonization of the digital age.”

Carl Beam

Last Name: Beam

Biography (English): Among the rapidly growing number of important First Nations artists in Canada, Carl Beam RCA was a strong, independent character and by that virtue he became a leader. His 1985 painting, The North American Iceberg (titled in ironic opposition to the Art Gallery of Ontario’s landmark exhibition of the same year, The European Iceberg) was the first work by an artist of native ancestry purchased by the National Gallery of Canada as contemporary art. He mainly eschewed traditional style and imagery and helped himself to the world through its overflowing inventory of photo-documents, inserting the personal and the symbolic alongside the iconic in remarkably lucid and powerful combinations that partially disguised the artist’s own motives and intentions to force the viewer’s active involvement in their interpretation.
