Within Dialogue, Leo Kamen Installation
Artist: April Hickox
Work ID: 49083
Description: Within Dialogue is an installation composed of life size photographs of mouths in the process of communicating. The images represent a broad age and cultural diversity and include both the Deaf and the hearing. In January 2000, one hundred and fifty of these mouths were exhibited at the Leo Kamen Gallery with a smaller version of the installation continuing through February 2001. Within Dialogue became an outdoor installation the following year at the St. Norbert Cultural Centre Winnipeg. Historically this site housed a congregation of monks who, because of their religious beliefs, chose not to speak but developed a sign language system of their own. The work was presented in what was once the monks' vegetable garden. The outdoor version of Within Dialogue includes an audio component produced in collaboration with the Toronto based sound artist, Tom Third. This soundscape uses recordings of the sounds created by the body movements of people using American Sign Language. The mouths are mounted on woode

Porcelain, Crystal, Glass (installation)
Artist: April Hickox
Work ID: 49106
Description: Porcelain, Crystal, Glass, builds on the ideas from Glance. This work isolates the gesture as expression of a particular moment. With Porcelain, Crystal, Glass, I have been employing a more consciously constructed approach to image making. Working with models and studio lighting, I have been photographing a variety of gesturing hands holding fragments of broken objects. Porcelain, Crystal, Glass, includes three suites of prints. The first is a series of 17 different individual's hands holding pieces of once functional objects. These shards are placed in the open, yet gesturing hand. The hand shape is reflective of the gestures one might make when questioning or in conversation. The next suite is a series of images of one individual's hands struggling to cradle all the pieces of a large broken object. The third suite of prints are tea cups that have been broken, repaired and stacked in what appears to be unstable towers.

Glance
Artist: April Hickox
Work ID: 49098
Description: Glance 2001. Seven Years ago, I began photographing details of hands in allegorical and portrait paintings. I was drawn first to the stories and myths contained in these works. Rather than picking a particular time period to work with, I photographed hands which were representative of the hand shapes used in American Sign Language. I was also looking for the symbolism used in Christian paintings and the formal composition of portrait painting. Through this process I began to isolate the hand as a reference point for the visual narrative and coding in the paintings. The hands in my photographs are in the act of performing everyday tasks: the gathering of cloth, holding a book open, embracing another person, caressing small gestures from everyday movements and tasks taken for granted and which pass largely unnoticed. These gestures, seen in isolation, could be frames taken from a sequence in a film. The movement in the work alludes to background sounds, the rustling of cloth, the closing of a book, or the conversation of two lovers. This work begins to explore the richness of language expressed through body postures, hand shape, and motion. These genderless fragments draw the viewer in to observe the nuance and beauty of the common place.

Glance
Artist: April Hickox
Work ID: 49096

Porcelain, Crystal, Glass
Artist: April Hickox
Work ID: 49114
