Dusk Box
Artist: Tony Urquhart
Work ID: 67861
Description: The main aesthetic of his box is simple, but not immediately discernable. As its title suggests, it concerns the time of day when light is fading. The exterior is a dark brown-black, and the interior is of very soft, lighter colours that don't have any definite chroma - i.e. not red or yellow or blue - just as when at dusk colours become hard to distinguish. The outer cabinet reminds me slightly of a 1940's radio, of the kind I used to listen to around 5 or 6 o'cock - i.e. at dusk.

Rocamadour II view 1 of 6
Artist: Tony Urquhart
Work ID: 67872
Description: Description:
Rocamadour is a pilgrimage town in south west France. It is constructed literally on the side of a cliff. There is a caged garden halfway up the stairs leading from the main street to the church high above which contains a black virgin said to work miracles. I based all four sculptures on this garden. Rocamadour II, III, and IV are just the garden, while Rocamadour I (which is in a private collection) is part box and part cage. All four have plexiglass wings which are painted with bits of paint. I was beginning to think back to my earlier paintings and wanted to get the effect of ambiguity into sculpture - most of which is either there or not (i.e. Moore to Michaelangelo). The Rocamadour 'cages' are most interesting visually when you are able to look through one plexiglass wing - through the object filled box to the wing in back with its bits of paint.

Opening Box – Rococco view 1 of 4
Artist: Tony Urquhart
Work ID: 67975
Description: Description:
A very early piece, this box shows the direct influence of the German pilgrimage churches I had seen in the summer of 1967 - such as viertzen hieligen, die vies, and many others - most in the beautiful bavarian countryside. Their plain exterior contrasted with an incredibly busy interior, all pristinely painted white wood, false marble, guilding, and richly coloured paintings. I wanted to imitate the strong contrast between interior and exterior. The red interior was mostly intuitive, but people have seen 'the interior of a stomach' and all kinds of impolite things. On the other hand, most viewers interpret the exterior as polite and delicate, especially when it is only slightly open. It is this ability[through the position of the doors] to have many combinations of colour, texture, light and dark etc., thus provoking different reactions that have kept me interested in this format for over forty years.

Brick Box view 1 of 6
Artist: Tony Urquhart
Work ID: 67909
Description: Description:
This is the only box I have done that is neither on a stand or a pedestal. It sits on the floor and doors open via furniture rollers underneath. It is a box of somewhat humerous contradictions. The container, the outer box, looks physically like a strong box - with screws and rivets. However, it is painted in delicate sky-like colours and the fairly realistic looking reddish bricks inside are actually 'styrofoam'. I found out it had another unintended 'use' - that is you could bowl with it. I was installing it in a mall and found that, with the doors all open, the rollers would let it slowly turn and the doors swing in different ways for about 30 to 40 feet - if you gave it a good shove. Needless to say this has not happened since that time - I think.

Untitled view 1 of 2
Artist: Tony Urquhart
Work ID: 67899
Description: Description:
This box was in a private collection for almost 40 years. Its title has been lost in the 'sands of time'. When I first started the opening boxes I experimented with contrasting insides with outsides. This particular work has quite a painterly exterior on a white crackled surface, while the interior is smooth and dark. Early on I realized that if the piece was only about the surprise you got on opening it, it was in effect a 'one trick pony'. The morning after my first opening box show, Ii returned to the Isaacs gallery and found all the boxes closed. I asked Av Isaacs why he had closed them and he replied I did'nt. It seems viewers don't like to leave them open - like closet doors or bedroom drawers. I finally put up labels stating 'please leave the box in some interesting position'.

Temple I view 1 of 3
Artist: Tony Urquhart
Work ID: 67863
Description: Description:
This may well be my favourite box. It does some interesting things form a plastic viewpoint, but its inspiration came from the death of my grandmother who was very important in my life. [My mother, father, brother and I lived under one roof - myself from the time I was born until age 26. The grounds of the house were landscaped and contained many things which I think made landscape a major part of my work.]
The box is very simple in design and colour - it only has two doors and they open symmetrically. The grey outside has little variation with restrained ornaments front and back. The inside provides a stark contrast, looking like the interior of a burned out building or a sort of cave. The stand is also important to me because it was the first time I had obviously tied it in with the sculpture. [Earlier boxes had had no stands and were often placed too low or sometimes too high to get full effect. I soon began making stands at the exact height of my saw table upon which most boxes were made.]

In Admiration of Bosch view 1 of 4
Artist: Tony Urquhart
Work ID: 67903
Description: Description:
This is another work where I express my gratitude to a major figure of the past. In some of the 'In Admiration of' pieces I have actually referenced objects, colours, etc. in that artist's work. In this piece, however, I have tried to catch the mood, a sort of 'surreal zanyness' that often pervades in Bosch's work. It is not a box, but a cage, and as the doors open and close strange little objects inside the box go up and down by means of fishline and pulleys. This is also one of the first works where the box is actually attached to, rather than placed on, its base.

Fourteen Rings view 1 of 2
Artist: Tony Urquhart
Work ID: 67873
Description: Description:
The title of this piece came from my counting of how many times I had used the circle inside the box, on the top and in the two Plexiglas wings. It is probably the most monochromatic box I have done - flat black with dark silverish interior on top of brownish black hanging pieces inside, the white rings on the top echoed by the white wings with dark circles attached to the opening doors. It is very austere, with symmetrically opening doors and an evenly textured mat black outside. The doors with 'wings' attached make for a strong gesture when opened - like two outstretched arms. It was the 'star' of a fold-out illustration in the May 973 artscanada magazine.

A Strange Fisherman
Artist: Tony Urquhart
Work ID: 67951
Description: Description:
This is an early box in which I was being experimental. The format of 'opening box' had not quite formed and I was guided more by my imagination. The 'fishlines' allowed me to go below the bottom of the box and even hang onto or below the height of the stand. When I began to concentrate on the formal aspects such as the way the doors opened, I found colour became more monochrome - which is logical in order to show form. Can you imagine a rainbow-coloured Michaelangelo - or even Henry Moore? In this particular box, I let my colour sense run wild. I only saw this box about 35 years after I made it, (it is a recent donation to the University of Toronto Art Centre), and I was struck by the resemblance to a piece of folk art, which pleased me.

Cave of the Black Lights view 1 of 6
Artist: Tony Urquhart
Work ID: 67849
Description: Description:
Some of my boxes are fairly reality based - but this one is an intuitive fantasy. The idea of the cave - combined with lights that are black and therefore would not illuminate it comes surely from my subconscious. The meaning (in any sense) of most of my work is not apparent to me while I am working on the building or painting of it and occurs, if at all, long after I have finished it. Jack Shadbolt once said to me, a work of art is finished when the impulse to create it is used up. If I feel good about a piece, it is finished. Surely a work such as this can have more than one meaning depending on the viewer.

The Well view 1 of 2
Artist: Tony Urquhart
Work ID: 67888
Description: Description:
This box was extensively reworked. The technical idea was to make a piece of art that could literally turn itself inside out. I had received a gift of a number of letter press lead images from Michael Ondaatje. These had been used to print a textbook of insects (I guess). Originally, I had built a well-like mound in the interior out of which arose a butterfly (in lead) and called it 'Michael's Message'. I liked the idea but lacked the technical ability to do it in a satisfactory way. After a few years I reworked it, taking out the butterfly and hanging a strange sort of object directly over the 'well'. It became perhaps less poetic, but more mysterious.

Along the Road view 1 of 5
Artist: Tony Urquhart
Work ID: 67856
Description: Description:
The work is based on various things I had seen on one of my many trips to Europe. Mountains, reliquaries, mirrored interiors, cages, wires, are all mixed in. I believe that this is one of only two boxes that are part cage and part box. On the small opening door there is a tiny object - white, with yellow 'stems' coming out of the top. This was actually based on a wreath I saw in a French cemetery, which was actually a bouquet of flowers wrapped in white paper at the bottom. The paper had ripped and decayed showing the stalks of the flowers in places that made it look like a skull. I photographed it and also used it in several drawings and a painting. The work taken as a whole doesn't imitate any one of these things, but combines them into an entirely new object. That for me is the 'fun' of it.

One side of this work is based on a confessional - ergo the name. The other side contains a rocky cliff with a strange oval object in front of it. The stand which raises the tiny box up to viewer height is partly inspired by the Eiffel Tower, and has tiny abstract 'views' painted between the ribs.

Box of the Earth view 1 of 8
Artist: Tony Urquhart
Work ID: 67967
Description: Description:
This box is closely related to and in fact followed a series of paintings I did in the early 1980s. The paintings were titled Threshold I, II, III etc. and resulted from an unexpected discovery. I had been photographing and drawing in French cemeteries for many years. The monuments were quite different from ours and very beautiful. Because of lack of space, however, French cemeteries only rent graves, and at the end of 5, 10, 25 years, if no family member re-rents them, the monument is knocked down and the bones are placed in a common ossuary. I came upon one of these 'repossessions' and, as I peeked cautiously over the edge, saw my own reflection in the water that had collected on the bottom of the 'caveau'. I incorporated the same thing in the box and used beautiful [to me] mud colours on the box's exterior. The exterior also relates to a series [of 14] stations of the cross that I was working on at the same time, which can be hung in conjunction with the box.

In Admiration of Constable view 1 of 4
Artist: Tony Urquhart
Work ID: 67882
Description: Description:
John Constable was one of England's finest landscape painters. This box is a homage to that master. I have already done a number of homages starting with an oil and ink on paper In Admiration of Fan Kwan back in 1964. Homages are fun because you can take bits and pieces from your heroes and combine them in your own way. For instance a 'homage' to Constable should probably be a painting (he never did sculpture). I did do two-dimensional painting, but on the outside of the box. Some of the things he took delight in and painted were hay fields and ordinary stones, and I have built some of these in the interior of the box. I also added a sort of waterwheel or mill stone suggestion using the round base of the sculpture. In the end, however, you most admire when you don't try to replicate their every move, but incorporate some references within your own style. In this case the method of opening the box was one on my most inventive.

Queenish view 1 of 2
Artist: Tony Urquhart
Work ID: 67876
Description: Description:
In 1988 I was part of the 'octagon' project. Eight artists were to be stationed on the top of a glacier in Comox, B.C. (in the event it turned out there were ten of us). We were aided by local climbers and the Canadian Armed forces. The particular glacier we were on was saced to local First Nations and at a welcoming 'pow-wow' the story of the glacier was related to us. Briefly put, long ago things were bad and the mighty spirit told three families to provision three canoes and bring ropes. The rains came and everyone else drowned, but the three canoes were kept safe by a great white whale which held onto the ropes. When the waters subsided the whale became a glacier - the very one we were on top of. Needless to say a strict 'box' form wouldn't work as well as the present one which conveys both whale and glacier - plus rocks, clouds and sky - via the wings at each end.
Part way through the building I decided, if it was my work, it would somehow have to open, and the logical thing in a mountain was a cave. To locate it aesthetically to the form, I had to have it open up and down - not horizontally - as in all of my other boxes. This meant devising some elastics along with the hinges so that it would not just flop down, but would stay in various positions. It also meant that I had a 'cave' to design. I made it somewhat niche-like because that type of seashell-like shape seemed to fit better with the overall design. To decorate the back of the opening door, I decided to put in a form (maybe it was an old doorstop) and a ring of feathers around it. I called the medicine man to ask if I could name it 'Queenish' and he was quite willing.
At the opening of a showing of all the work the artists had done on the Comox glacier, he told me he liked the sculpture but he asked how I knew that, when the tribe had troubles, the elders met in a cave and they sat around an object not unlike my doorstop
.and that there were always seven of them. I replied that I had no idea. Then I counted the feathers I had added, and there were seven of them.

Dark Green view 1 of 3
Artist: Tony Urquhart
Work ID: 67843
Description: Description:
Dark Green is one of the most elegant pieces I have done. It is over six feet tall on its base and references African Sculpture (among other things) via the votive object behind a sheet of plexiglass and the feathers on the top. I often use plexiglass. In this case it serves both to protect the object on the interior but as well via reflection - to distance the object from the viewer to make it slightly less accessible - and to reference museum objects displayed behind glass. I feel it adds a general air of mystery especially as when in Dark Green it is displayed in a niche.

Ravine view 1 of 5
Artist: Tony Urquhart
Work ID: 67956
Description: Description:
Ravine was inspired by grass growing on a hillside. As well it references birds - via the pattern on the inside of the opening doors. The plexiglass pallet on top not only protects the 'Ravine' but also shows the paint used to colour it. Because of the panels attached to the doors, this box has many interesting ways of positioning it.

French Road Piece IV view 1 of 4
Artist: Tony Urquhart
Work ID: 67904
Description: Description:
This was one of four small boxes based on things I had seen in France. None of these' things' is referenced literally in any of the boxes but there seems to be a unity, sometimes in colour, sometimes in textures. In making a drawing, in France or in Ireland, I find if I stay too long in front of what I am drawing I get too literal and the work gets to be rather pedestrian. Doing these series of 'French road pieces' therefore was helped by the fact that they were at 'third remove' i.e. the actual things seen [fences walls textures etc.] were remembered at '"second remove" several months later in drawings for the boxes and finally at "third remove" in the actual making of the boxes.

Kerry Box view 1 of 4
Artist: Tony Urquhart
Work ID: 67891
Description: Description:
Kerry takes its name from County Kerry in Ireland, the landscape of which was the inspiration. It is a land of old massive hills with beautifully rounded tops. The top of Kerry is inspired by those hills - but the model for it was the corner stone of a bridge I often traveled past. The sides are evocative of panoramic strips of landscape in landscape colours. When the two large doors are fully open, they match up with the back to make a large 2-D 'almost' painting. The third door - very tiny - opens into a dark invisible niche, which to me symbolizes Ireland's distant past. I have used this device in several boxes, lining the inside with black velvet, which is so light absorbing that it just looks dark and empty. I've seen viewers poke their fingers in to see what was inside.
