Work ID: 72708

Description: Drawing lying on a drafting table, touching sensitive magnetic tape and audio computer components. When the surface of the drawing is firmly caressed it activates five MP3 players that speak in Inuktitut and English about first experiences using money in the Arctic. The voices may be heard simultaneously, causing an experience of glossolalia - where meaning is lost in the babble of multiple languages, dialects, translations; very like the experience of daily life in the Arctic.

Qamanituaq Diary, detail

Qamanituaq Diary, detail

Artist: K.J. (Jack) Butler

Work ID: 72718

Description: Installation, Owens Art Gallery, Sackville, NB.

Three suspended digital print collages on vinyl, each 96 x 42 in.; collaged (pinned to the wall) pencil drawing on shaped papers (A StoryBones Game), based on my personal experiences of life in Qamanituaq (Baker Lake, Nunavut) 1969 - 2008.

(StoryBones Games: Traditionally, Inuit arrange the head bones of a large lake trout into patterns telling stories of heroes while voicing current domestic conflict. The closer the telling cuts to the "bone of contention", the greater the audience's respect). Here, I play the StoryBones game myself, drawing on the shapes of the bones. The contents of My Qamanituaq Diary derive from my arctic visual diaries, 1969 to the present engagement. A new drama is created with each new installation-configuration. Playing the game extends to the touch sensitive audio-drawing installation My earliest memory of money is selling flower seeds door to door .
