Conceived as several installations, this installation-exhibition looks at the missionary activities conducted by the Jesuits of Québec in both China and in Québec such as the creation of the Musée d’art chinois in 1930, as well as the phenomenon of “Acheter un petit chinois” in the 1950s and 1960s. The installations include ornamental gates, a missionary kiosk, festive bunting, jazzy music, a village of pagodas, objects from the original Jesuit collection borrowed from the Musée de la civilisation à Québec, and ‘chinoiseries’ lent by Maskoutains and the Société du patriomoine religieux du diocèse de Saint-Hyacinthe.

Questioning the display and interpretation of culture and community, this installation recreates and combines how the Jesuits and other religious groups had their missionary kiosks and exhibits on China, and that includes original objects from the collection of the Musée d’art chinois (now in the collection of the MCQ) along with other readymades, found items, and fabricated sculptures.

Conceived as several installations, this installation-exhibition looks at the missionary activities conducted by the Jesuits of Québec in both China and in Québec such as the creation of the Musée d’art chinois in 1930, as well as the phenomenon of “Acheter un petit chinois” in the 1950s and 1960s. The installations include ornamental gates, a missionary kiosk, festive bunting, jazzy music, a village of pagodas, objects from the original Jesuit collection borrowed from the Musée de la civilisation à Québec, and ‘chinoiseries’ lent by Maskoutains and the Société du patriomoine religieux du diocèse de Saint-Hyacinthe.
