We’re never gonna get close because it’s hanging, since we took off the horse but kept the rider
Artist: Chloe Lum & Yannick Desranleau
Work ID: 85042
Description: Series of performances/interventions on 26 public artworks in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, June 10 - 21, 2014. Project produced in collaboration with Open Space.
Photos by Alexis Hogan, Doug Jarvis, and Yannick Desranleau.
In the work, We’re never gonna get close because it’s hanging, since we took off the horse but kept the rider, we are creating temporary interventions in screenprinted paper and tyvek to place on public sculptures and monuments throughout Victoria. By intervening directly on existing sculptures, we seek to examine the conventions and reception of public art in a playful, irreverent manner.

The Lead Apron
Artist: Chloe Lum & Yannick Desranleau
Work ID: 85016
Description: Performed by Sarah Wendt
Lighting design by Karine Gauthier
Assistant Photographer: Edwin Isford
A companion piece to the video installation, What Do Stones Smell Like in the Forest?, The Lead Apron is a duet between the performer and their props. The props serve as body extensions, made to shift what physical engagement looks like. As the performer recounts how chronic illness has changed how she relates to her body and how her body filters her experience of the world, her use of the objects hints at a rich physical world of illness and slowness. Her recitations are punctuated with mournful and repetitive phrases on the French horn, yet there is always comedy and absurdity in the loss of control of the body.
Measurements: Solo performance for horn player, approx. 20 minutes; installation

A romance of reclaiming the ill body from the jaws of stillness by merging with the universe of things. Via a network of things, the body extends itself, connecting with stuff, reaching spaces and places with greater ease and expanded potentials. Like an ever-growing creature made of unfired clay, new limbs being hastily built-on as others drop off. Possibilities multiply. Stilted with the anxiety of showing its vulnerability to the outside world, the ill body is awkward in public, but comfortable at home. The ill mind/body is never fully relieved; at best, it manages to forget its ill state through distraction and fantasy. The pain of the body slows down the mind, opening it up to near-constant reverie.

The Lead Apron
Artist: Chloe Lum & Yannick Desranleau
Work ID: 85019
